New AI Approach and Open-Source Software Advance Reduction of Methane Emissions in the Oil and Gas Industry

Collaboratory to Advance Methane Science (CAMS)-supported project improves effectiveness of continuous methane sensing data

02/17/25 Des Plaines, IL

The Source Emission Accounting & Localization System (SEALS) project, sponsored by the Collaboratory to Advance Methane Science (CAMS), a research consortium administered by GTI Energy with leading energy companies, addresses a technology gap in bottom-up methane emissions characterization.

Results provide operators, regulators, and the research community with a novel artificial intelligence-based approach and associated open-source software that advances more accurate and reliable methane emissions assessments in the oil and gas industry. Using state-of-the-art atmospheric modeling and the latest machine learning (ML) techniques, the project led by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) created datasets of virtual emissions scenarios to train and test new ML models to locate and quantify methane emissions at upstream and midstream oil and gas facilities using continuous monitoring sensors.

The data can also be used as a cost-effective option for further testing source and localization performance of the sensors. The python-based workflows are available for further research and extension.

Publication of a peer-reviewed research paper is expected later this year.

About the Collaboratory to Advance Methane Science (CAMS)
CAMS is an industry-led collaborative research consortium working to advance methane-related science to better understand global methane emissions and the need for additional solutions.

CAMS pursues scientific studies addressing methane emissions from all sectors along the entire natural gas value chain, from production to end use, in basins across the country. Studies will focus on detection, measurement, and quantification of methane emissions with the goal of finding opportunities for reduction.
